Officials can't say if Assistant Treasurer Stuart Robert used his huge taxpayer-funded internet bill to run any businesses from home.

They also can't say how Mr Robert ran up monthly bills of more than $2000, leading him to pay back $38,000 to taxpayers.

Labor senator Murray Watt questioned Department of Finance bureaucrats about Mr Robert's bills in a Senate estimates committee late on Tuesday night.

Department officials could not answer whether Mr Robert had used his home internet to run his businesses, or how he racked up the huge data bills.

The department said it had spoken to Mr Robert about various aspects of his office spending, but could not say whether it had raised the issue of his internet bills.

Mr Robert paid back extra charges to 2016, which the department said was the start of his current wireless internet plan.
