No bail bid for pair arrested in Sydney counter-terrorism raids

Two men charged after separate anti-terror raids in Sydney's west will remain behind bars until at least next week.

Omar Ammouche, 33, was charged with ammunition possession offences yesterday after counter-terrorism police raided a home in Greenacre in Sydney's west.

Jibryl Almaouie, 21, was charged with a string of offences, including unauthorised firearm possession, on the same day after a separate terrorism raid in December.

The men, who are not co-accused, did not appear when their cases were mentioned in Parramatta Local Court this morning.

Their cases were adjourned to Bankstown Local Court on Monday when they are expected to apply for bail.

Outside court their lawyer Adam Houda said neither of his clients were charged with terrorism-related offences.

"There is no suggestion at all there is any links with any terrorism," he said.

Asked why his clients were targeted by a operation specifically targeting home-grown terrorism, Mr Houda said it was a question for the authorities.

Mr Houda said the prosecution cases were weak.

"One of the hallmarks of our justice system is the presumption of innocence. So presume them innocent," he said.

Almaouie fronted Surry Hills Police Station yesterday after police raided a home in Condell Park in December.

The counter-terrorism team allegedly seized two shot guns, a rifle and ammunition.

Ammouche was arrested yesterday during another raid under a similar but separate counter-terrorism operation.
