No Aust soldiers hurt in Sinai attacks

Defence says no Australians were hurt in a pair of terrorist bomb attacks which injured six international peacekeepers in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

The US Defense Department said two roadside bombs on Thursday injured four US members of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) plus two others whose nationality wasn't disclosed.

Twenty-five Australian troops and the same number of New Zealanders serve with MFO, a non-UN peacekeeping mission founded in 1981 to oversee the agreement that ended conflict between Israel and Egypt.

Twelve countries contribute personnel to this mission.

An Australian Defence Force spokesman said no Australians were involved in the two roadside bomb incidents in the Northern Sinai on Thursday afternoon.

MFO was once regarded as a low-risk mission but the rise of militant Islamist groups in the Sinai, including Islamic State, has made it increasingly risky.

Militant attacks have mostly been directed at Egyptian forces but the international force is increasingly being targeted.
