Australians with convictions for serious or organised crime won't be able to work at the nation's airports under draft laws to crack down on drug imports.

The federal government on Thursday introduced legislation to prevent criminals with a history of drug dealing or other organised crime from obtaining a permit to work at airports and seaports.

Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss told parliament the bill would help tackle the drug ice "head on".
