No action for WA minister's expenses error

West Australian regional development minister Terry Redman will not be brought to task over an expenses claim bungle, unlike others in the Barnett cabinet.

It emerged over the weekend that the Warren-Blackwood MP claimed $240 in early 2009 for staying overnight in Perth when he was in Dubai representing the state as the agriculture and food minister.

He repaid the money last week, when he also admitted to two other mistakes while claiming accommodation allowances.

On Monday, the state opposition called for Mr Redman to be stripped of his portfolio, but Premier Colin Barnett said that wouldn't happen.

"The incident that I think is drawing attention was five years ago when he was travelling overseas. He arrived back a day earlier and the record had gone through and he claimed incorrectly for one night.

"Clearly, an accident. I am not going to take any further action."

In July last year, Mr Barnett took a tough line on health minister and deputy premier Kim Hames, who quit as tourism minister after admitting he wrongly claimed more than $1000 for accommodation.

The premier accepted it was an innocent mistake but insisted "there must be consequences".

In late 2009, the opposition called on former treasurer Troy Buswell to resign from all of his portfolios after he admitted to wrongly signing-off on two expenses claims.

But it wasn't until April the following year, after he admitted to an affair with Fremantle Greens MP Adele Carles, that Mr Buswell resigned from cabinet.

Some eight months later, he was brought back to the front bench. He quit cabinet again in March this year after revelations of late night car crashes following a wedding.
