Nine finalises content deal with Google, Facebook

Nine has finalised a content deal with US tech titans Google and Facebook, after months of high-level negotiations.

The deal comes after a tense battle between Australia's biggest news publishers and Google and Facebook over the nation's new media bargaining laws.

In February, Facebook went to the brink and declared it would prohibit publishers and people in Australia from sharing or viewing Australian and international news content in response to Australia's proposed media bargaining law.

Facebook later reversed that decision after a strong backlash across the world.

Under the mandatory code of conduct, technology giants Google and Facebook are required to negotiate with Australian media companies over payment for news content and notify them of algorithm changes.
