Teen killed in violent brawl in Sydney's south-west was ‘karate-kicked from behind’ police allege

Horrific new details about the alleged murder of a Sydney teenager at an out-of-control party have emerged.

A brawl broke out on Chester Road, Ingleburn on Friday night, and emergency services were called to the scene just before 9.40pm.

Alex Ioane, 18, was found on the road with serious head injuries.

Today two men were charged with his murder, and police revealed more details about the fight that led to the teenager’s death.

“Police will allege that the young man was standing there, not involved in any altercations when an 18-year-old man came from behind and kicked him in the head in a karate-style kick, which felled him to the ground,” NSW Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said.

The brawl is believed to have spilled onto the street from a party at a home on Chester Road, with crowds dispersing following the arrival of officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command.

A baseball bat and golf club, along with wooden and metal poles were seized for forensic examination as several crime scenes were established by police.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Moroney said it was "a chaotic scene".

"Obviously this is a very tragic set of circumstances, a young 18-year-old boy who goes out for the evening, and has been killed in such a brutal manner," he said.

Two males, aged 17 and 18, were arrested at the home and charged with murder at Campbelltown Police Station. They were refused bail.

Tafuna Taumalolo, 18, did not appear when his matter was briefly mentioned in Campbelltown Local Court today.

His lawyer made no application for bail and it was formally refused. The case is due back at the same court on July 31.

Friends of Taumalolo told reporters outside court the 18-year-old was not a killer.

"He's a good guy," a friend said.

When asked if Taumalolo was a killer the friend shook his head and said "no".

The 17-year-old is due to face at Campbelltown Children's Court today.

A search warrant was also executed at a home in Campbelltown, where several items were seized.

Inquiries into the incident continue.

Isoa Rabuatoka, 19, was also arrested at the party after he allegedly fled from officers and broke into a nearby unit.

He was charged with destroy or damage property, and enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse and faced Parramatta Bail Court yesterday.

There is no suggestion Rabuatoka was involved in the murder and his charge relates only to the break-and-enter of a neighbour’s unit during the party.

He was refused bail, with the matter adjourned until May 29 when it will be heard at Campbelltown Local Court.
