Opal fares would reduce in price if premier re-elected

Sydney commuters will see a big reduction in fares, with Gladys Berejiklian promising to lower the weekly Opal cap if elected on Saturday.

The weekly cap on Opal fares is currently $63.20 before free travel kicks in, but on July 1 the Coalition proposes to drop that to $50 a week.

A return trip from Penrith to Town Hall for five work days costs $60.84, the proposal saving regular commuters $563 a year.

The plan will cost more than $10 million a year and see 50,000 train, bus, ferry and light rail passengers cash in on free trips.

The Premier announced the package at Penrith railway station, where Member Stuart Ayres is looking increasingly likely to lose his seat.

Former Prime Minister John Howard is expected to join Gladys Berejiklian, on a street walk, as the Liberal Party continues their attacks on Labor’s preference deal with the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers.
