Elderly murder suspect told court he didn’t understand what was happening
An elderly man has been remanded in custody over the alleged murder of a woman, believed to be his wife.
Ronald George Sparkes, 88, was yesterday arrested at an aged care facility at the foot of Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges.
Mr Sparkes appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today, nodding toward four emotional relatives as he sat down in the dock, charged with murder.

Police allege the 88-year-old killed Margaret Sparkes, 87, at their Martin Luther Homes retirement village unit in The Basin yesterday afternoon.
It's believed that the pair were married and had previously lived for decades at Ferny Creek, a suburb near the aged car village.
A neighbour told 9News that while Ms Sparks was a very nice person, issues with her health had forced the couple to transition to assisted living.
The couple is believed to have moved to the facility due to Ms Sparks poor health. 9news
The couple share a son and a daughter, according to the neighbour.
When the Magistrate today asked if the defendant knew what was going on, the 88-year-old replied: "Sorry I don't."
She then explained that he would be facing a charge of murder.
Mr Sparkes made no application for bail and will remain in custody until August.
