Cop charged over kicking and stomping during arrest

A Victorian police officer has been charged with assaulting a man he arrested in Melbourne's north.
Senior Constable James Vassilopoulos, 39, was subject to an Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission investigation following allegations of excessive force over the arrest in 2016.
In February, IBAC charged Vassilopoulos with two counts of assault, one for kicking the 23-year-old man he was arresting in the head and the other for stomping on his back.
The man was being arrested for attempting to rob a pharmacist in Preston.
Vassilopoulos’ prosecution began with a mention in Heidelberg Magistrates Court today.
The court set a contest mention date for June 25, when Vassilopoulos will enter a plea.
