Voter support for Anthony Albanese falling: poll

Voters are turning away from Labor leader Anthony Albanese although support for both major parties has increased, according to the latest Newspoll.

Mr Albanese's approval rating dropped six points to 35 per cent, while Prime Minister Scott Morrison's rose one point to 49 per cent, the poll published in The Australian newspaper indicates.

Mr Morrison leads the Labor leader as preferred prime minister by 20 points.

The Coalition's primary vote is up one point since the last poll to 43 per cent, while Labor also gained a point to reach 35 per cent for its primary vote.

The Coalition retains its 51-49 lead on a two-party-preferred basis.

Support for minor parties apart from the Greens and One Nation has slipped from 9 per cent three weeks ago to 5 per cent.

However, backing for the Greens rose a point to 12 per cent while One Nation also gained a point to sit at 5 per cent.

The poll of 1661 voters was conducted between September 5-7.
