A teenager who led police on a dramatic chase through Adelaide's city streets was apprehended after being spotted by an onlooker.

The 17-year-old was in a police car on Wright Street about 9am today when it stopped and he opened the door.

Despite wearing handcuffs, he sprinted away from the officers who gave chase but they quickly lost sight of him.

Dozens of police swarmed the area, with the teenager found a short time later hiding behind a car in Byron Place.

Witness George Stamoulos told 9News: “I just heard footsteps, really heavy footsteps. They sounded like they were running. Then a police officer shouted: ‘Where did he go? Where did he go’.”

The police dog squad and dozens of extra officers scoured the city streets to find the fleeing teenager.

But according to another witness, his recapture was down to a member of the public.

Daniel Koufopoulos told 9News: “One of the reps (sales representatives) who come in here said he saw some guy hiding in front of the car and that’s when they (police) came and found him.”

The teenager had earlier been arrested at Oaklands Park for breaching his bail and was being transported to a city police station.

Officers say a member of the public's car was damaged by a patrol car that rolled forward as police gave chase.

The teenager now faces the further charge of escaping lawful custody as police investigate how he managed to escape.
