First look at pig shed where backpacker was held and raped

The first images of the filthy pig shed where a South Australian man raped a European backpacker after abducting her have emerged.

They include a dirty old couch where the farmer attacked the 24-year-old Belgian woman.

Yesterday Gene Bristow was found guilty of six charges: one count of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault, and one count of attempted rape.

During the month-long trial, details emerged how the tourist was held in the pig shed on Bristow’s hobby farm at Meningie, 150km southeast of Adelaide.

Bristow responded to her advert posted in February 2017 and offered her a job, later picking her up from a bus stop at Murray Bridge and driving her to his property.

She said he took her inside a disused pig shed where he asked to check the soles of her feet for needle marks and then pressed what turned out to be a fake gun to her back.

The 54-year-old bound his victim's hands and feet, and chained her to the ground before leaving her alone in the shed.

Bristow made her lie face-down on a "filthy" couch in the shed and she could do nothing except try and curl into a ball as Mr Bristow attacked her.

The woman was eventually able to loosen her bonds and use her laptop to alert authorities.

In his earlier evidence, Bristow said the woman was never held against her will, insisting she was free to move about the farm and leave when she wanted.

Bristow is remanded in custody and due to return to the District Court in Adelaide on Friday for sentencing.
