Search for mother of newborn abandoned in Sydney backyard continues

Police are today continuing their search for the mother of a baby abandoned at a home in Sydney's west.

Officers said they are "really concerned" about the mother of a newborn who was abandoned in a Sydney backyard on Friday, and have called for the public's help to find the woman.

The newborn girl was found alone in the backyard of a home on Girra Road in Blacktown about 2.30pm on Friday after a family heard her crying.

It's believed the baby was only between an hour and three hours old when she was found naked and crying.

NSW Police Acting Inspector David McInerney said yesterday the baby is "fine and healthy".

She is being cared for by Blacktown Hospital, where she was taken on Friday after being treated by paramedics.

It is unknown whether she was born in the backyard, but police have confirmed she was not born in a hospital.

McInerney said police were still searching for the child's mother, who police were very worried about.

"We don't know who the mother is, and we are really concerned about her and her welfare, and her physical and mental wellbeing," he said.

He has called for her to come forward, saying that while the incident was "very concerning", she was not in any trouble with police.

"Don't be scared to come forward, because all we want to do is help you," he said.

He has also called for members of the community to come forward with information or CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time.

It's believe the child could have been in the backyard from as early as noon on Friday.

CCTV has shown a car pulling up and picking up a person from the corner of the road near the house around that time but the identity for that person is unknown.
