New Sydney airport gets noise restrictions

Flight paths over western Sydney suburbs will not be allowed to merge at a single location under restrictions for the new Badgerys Creek airport.

The federal government released the final environmental impact statement for the airport on Thursday, which also sets out the preferred option for overnight flights to minimise the number of homes affected by aircraft noise.

The government will set up a community forum to give residents in the area a say in where flight paths might go.

The government says the ban on single merge points will help allay the concerns of residents about noise pollution over the world-heritage listed Blue Mountains.

But the noise levels will depend on where you're located, Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher says.

"The impact will be very low," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

The ban still needs final approval from Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg.
