Queensland public servants, including police, will be protected from being sued under new legislation.

The laws, which have bipartisan supportand are due to be passed on Wednesday, would instead transfer liability to the state.

The government, however, would be able to recoup costs from the employee if they are found to have acted with gross negligence or engaged in conduct that was not in good faith.

Premier Campbell Newman, who introduced the bill, says it will provide a high level of certainty for public servants.

"It is letting our police, teachers, doctors and nurses and staff on the front desk of client service centres, that they will be supported in performing their roles," he told parliament.

"It does not take away their responsibility or accountability."
