Queensland seniors not taking advantage of power price discounts

Households in Queensland's south-east have the chance to cash in on a whopping power price discount, as energy retailers compete harder than ever to entice families to switch providers.

A 28 percent discount is up for grabs with a two-minute phone call.

Canstar Blue's Simon Downes said the newest electricity offer will help families already struggling to pay their bills.

Alinta sparked the market shake-up quickly followed by AGL with a deal of a 28 percent discount if you direct debit or pay your bill on time.

Now other providers are stepping up their savings as well.

Energy Australia has announced it will give customers the same discount and a guarantee of no energy price rises for two years.

1st Energy is on board too with the offer including a no lock-in contract.

"If you don't meet the conditions, they become some of the most expensive plans," Mr Downes said.

It's up to consumers to make sure they're on the best plan possible.

"Be aware you'll only qualify for these discounts if you phone up your retailer and then ask for them," Mr Downes said.

New research shows seniors across South East Queensland are missing out on massive savings with 38 percent admitting they haven't switched providers in the past two years.

While a two-minute phone call can be all it takes to switch providers and get a better deal, online is where the real savings can be found.

"(Find out) who can help" Mr Downes said.

"Can your children? Can your grandchildren help?"
