New party's preferences helped ALP in Tas

A new political party formed to fight factory trawler vessels says it helped deliver Labor's resounding election victory in Tasmania.

The Australian Recreational Fishers' Party achieved swings of up to 6.2 per cent in the seats of Lyons, Braddon and Bass with preferences going to Labor which snatched all three seats from the Liberal Party.

"It was our vote which flowed at about 65 per cent according to some scrutineers, that made the difference between who was delivered in Braddon and Lyons," party secretary Kevin Harkins told ABC Radio on Monday.
