Noosa bans clapping and singing in holiday rentals in strict noise crackdown

New laws in one of Queensland's most popular travel destinations have sparked concern from residents, as the council doubles down on noisy behaviour at holiday rentals.

From next week, Noosa Shire Council on the Sunshine Coast will enforce bans on clapping, shouting, arguing and singing, in a move many believe is too strict.

"I think when you're on holidays you have to be pretty relaxed and let people have fun," one woman said.

For Noosa's short-term rental homes, new laws will now require a property manager to live within 20km of the accommodation, available at a moment's notice to deal with noise complaints.

Under the new rules, managers must be on hand 24/7 and able to reach the property within 30 minutes.

But 86 per cent of short-term holiday rental owners live outside of Noosa, and 51 per cent live interstate.

"Take whatever steps are necessary to stop the noise disturbance," Noosa Shire Council deputy mayor Frank Wilkie said.

"I think most people will appreciate it as a legitimate attempt to ensure responsible behaviour."

The new rules respond to the popularity of Noosa as a destination for group holidaymakers, with the laws to be reviewed next year.

Sue Willis from Niche Luxury Accommodation predicts many will try to exploit the noise laws.

"It sounds like you can't sit around a pool and enjoy your children in the pool," she said.

"I think there are people out there who would prefer not to have a holiday house next to them and now they've got an open door for that complaint."
