New lead in Sarah Spiers' Claremont disappearance

A new lead in the disappearance and suspected murder of Perth teenager Sarah Spiers has prompted police to call for the public’s assistance to help solve the cold case.

The 18-year-old vanished after a night out in Claremont in January 1996.

Cold case Homicide Squad detectives want the public's help to find a white 1992 Toyota Camry station wagon.

The car’s Vehicle Identification Number was 6T172SV2109318479.

"It is a new line of inquiry we'd like to finalise," said Detective Superintendent Rod Wilde from the Special Crime Division.

"We are aware this car was deregistered in 2008, but from that time onwards it is unclear what happened to it."

"It may have been wrecked or abandoned, or could still be in use on a rural property."

Sarah Spiers called a taxi from a phone box in the early hours of January 27, 1996, but when the taxi arrived she was nowhere to be seen.

Her body has never been found.

The case has long been associated with the notorious Claremont serial killings – West Australia’s longest-running and most expensive police investigation.

In December 2016, police charged Bradley Robert Edwards with the murder of Ciara Glennon and Jane Rimmer, two decades after the killings.

Sarah's father, Don Spiers, has released a statement saying his family has been "kept informed by the police on the status of the investigation”.

Mr Spiers urged anyone who knows anything about this car, or where it might be, to contact police.
