An Adelaide council has moved to limit the number of cats residents can own to two and insist on desexing and microchipping.

Burnside council last night voted to adopt a bylaw capping the number of cats any households can own.

Those wanting to keep more will need to apply for a permit.
Cr Jane Davey led the charge for the law, saying the issue had been "bubbling along" for a long time.
The bylaw, which would have to be ratified by the State Government and which will also go through a period of public consultation, will also include fines for the owners of “nuisance cats”.
