New immigration HQ fit-out to cost $257m

The federal government will spend more than $257 million to fit-out office space for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in Canberra.

The proposed works will be across two locations - Canberra Airport and the suburb of Belconnen.

The fit-out is expected to be begin in August 2017 and be completed by February 2021.

The parliamentary committee on public works will scrutinise the proposal, as well as:

* the construction of a new Australian embassy in Washington DC, estimated to cost nearly $236.9 million

* the refurbishment of office space at the Australian Chancery Complex in Paris, worth almost $28 million

* upgrades at the Melbourne immigration transit accommodation facility in Broadmeadows, providing 140 beds and other infrastructure at a cost of $29 million

* more than $27 million of security upgrades at the Yongah Hill immigration detention centre in Western Australia

* the proposed fit-out of the National Disability Insurance Agency's head office in Geelong, worth $27 million.
