New fog cannons could smoke out Victorian thieves

High-tech fog cannons that release smog to blind and deter thieves will soon be available in Victoria.

One Melbourne service station has already installed the technology, which has sent a haze over would-be thieves.

Video obtained by 9NEWS shows the three would-be thieves trying to  steal cigarettes when a fog cannon activates and sends thick smoke down from the ceiling.

The offenders are visibly panicked by the unexpected haze and flee the scene with minimal loot.

Jeweller Mahmood Arbabun told 9NEWS he had also installed a fog cannon after his Brunswick shop was held up.

“Just press the button, that's it, there's fog everywhere, in two seconds,” he told 9NEWS.

“Everything we can to protect ourselves and to not lose any jewellery.”

The father-of-three is one of many business owners investing in the devices, which will also be marketed to homeowners.

“The old security systems - cameras and alarms - allows the perpetrator to get what they want,” Protect Security Systems spokesman Peter Hausner said.

Mr Hausner said he imports fog cannon systems from Denmark.

“The technology for homes will work in a very similar way to those in businesses, using sensors and alarm panels which the homeowner can set in the evening,” he said.

“It can protect a homeowner and give them peace of mind also.”

Home systems are expected to cost about $2000 and will be available in two months.
