New CEO announced for child abuse inquiry

Senior Queensland bureaucrat Philip Reed has been appointed as chief executive of the royal commission into child sexual abuse.

Mr Reed will take over from Janette Dines, who finished up in the CEO position on Friday following the surprise announcement of her resignation in May.

Mr Reed was until recently the director-general of the Queensland Department of Science, Information, Technology, Innovation and the Arts.

Prior to that, he was director-general of the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

Ms Dines presided over the establishment of the commission - known by its full name as the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse - from its establishment in 2012.

Ms Dines gave no reason for her resignation, saying only that she was happy to leave it in "good shape".

Mr Reed will start in his new role on Tuesday.

The commission is hearing evidence from survivors of child sexual abuse in private sessions in Melbourne during June and is due to deliver an interim report to the Governor-General on June 30.
