Quaedvlieg backs new Border Force boss

The sacked former boss of Border Force says the man chosen to replace him will continue to make the organisation more professional.

Michael Outram, who was the deputy commissioner and has been acting in the top role since last year, was on Friday officially given the job.

He has been in the role since Roman Quaedvlieg was put on paid leave while he was investigated for failing to disclose a relationship with a woman seeking employment with the ABF.

"Michael Outram is an excellent choice for the role of ABF Commissioner," Mr Quaedvlieg told AAP on Friday.

"I support his appointment unconditionally and I am confident, and also comforted, that the Australian borders will continue to be well secured with him at the helm.

"I'm sure that he will continue the professionalisation of the ABF under his leadership."

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Mr Outram played a fundamental role building the ABF.

"Mr Outram has provided the ABF with exceptional leadership, with a strong focus on operational excellence, professionalism, culture and values," Mr Turnbull said in a statement.

"He brings to the role more than 30 years' experience in law enforcement and public service in Australia and the United Kingdom, including frontline roles tackling terrorism, organised crime and corruption."

Mr Quaedvlieg was fired in March after 10 months of paid leave.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton at the time said Mr Quaedvlieg had made a "false statement" to him about his personal relationships, and failed to disclose a significant change in his personal life.
