New Australian fighter jets set to patrol our skies

The first of 72 Australian F-35 joint strike fighter jets has been delivered to Arizona, part of a $24 billion program set to change the face of the Australian air force.

The Australian fleet with be housed at the Luke Airforce Base in Glendale, Arizona until 2018.

"Actually seeing physically there, engines running, lights flashing and the guys coming in from overhear pulling the controls as they came in to land, it's a very proud moment," Brigadier General Scott Pleus said.

On the ground the F35s are bulky and very loud, but in the sky the unique combination of stealth, electronics and pure fire power make the Australian aircraft one of the most advanced in the world.
