It looked bad the first time but new video showing a French reporter getting washed away during a live TV cross has captured the full scale of the freak wave which hit her.

Fanny Agostini, a reporter with French news network BFMTV, was in Saint-Mal in north-west France on Friday when she was swept off her feet as thousands of viewers watched the live cross.

Her cameraman also staggered as water swept over the walls of the old city.

Now a bystander’s video of the dramatic live TV bungle shows the full scene unfold.

It reveals a high-speed wall of water nearly waist high blast through the narrow opening where the reporter was standing, knocking her clean off her feet.

The moment Ms Agostini glances over her shoulder and realises the wave is about to hit her is also captured – as are the small group of bystanders running away as the reporter stays put.

Drenched, the journalist managed to get back on her feet and continue the report as her studio-based colleagues barely contained their amusement.
