Former Olympian Neil Brooks bailed on $1.95m fraud charge

Former Olympic swimmer Neil Brooks has been bailed on a $1.9 million fraud charge. 

He was arrested at Brisbane Airport this morning, then faced the magistrates court and will be able to fly back to Hong Kong immediately. 

The serious fraud charge comes decades after Brooks won gold in the 4 x 100m relay medley at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. 

Brooks, aged 55, flew into the airport to surrender early today, after negotiating his return to Australia with police, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) said in a statement. 

His 45-year-old partner was arrested in Perth last month and also appeared in the Brisbane court today. 

Brooks is accused of making "dishonest representations" about the success of a sports clothing manufacturing company he was directing, and the charge dayes back to 2007. 

He allegedly made the representations "to induce a victim to purchase a fifty percent share of the company," police allege.

Brooks was born in England but moved to Australia at an early age. He broke the Australian record in the 100m freestyle in 1980.
