Get NDIS full rollout plans now, govt told

The federal government is being urged to move fast and finalise agreements with the states on the national disability insurance scheme.

With less than 10 months to go until thousands of people start transitioning into the scheme, NSW and Victoria stand as the only states which have signed plans for the full rollout.

A parliamentary committee checking up on the scheme says the government should "make all haste" with the bilateral pacts.

The lack of certainty around agreements was by far the most pressing issue the committee had repeatedly heard from throughout the sector, it said in a report on Thursday.

The agency in charge of the scheme is also being warned it cannot afford to be on autopilot with more than 400,000 people expected to get package plans from next year.

"This is not a set-and-forget enterprise and is going to require the best of all of us," committee chairman Bruce Billson told parliament.

There are also concerns about staffing shortages.

It's estimated the disability workforce will need to double to 162,000 through the transition phase.

The committee said it was also worried about a lack of safe and affordable accommodation for people with disabilities, which could limit their ability to live an ordinary life.

"If the matter of accommodation remains unresolved, it could significantly impinge on people's ability to fully exercise their individual choice and control, impacting on their ability to improve their quality of life and care," it said.
