Nauru to set up court of appeal

The Nauru government has announced it is establishing its own court of appeal.

Since independence 50 years ago the tiny Pacific island nation has been using the High Court of Australia to handle appeals.

"This will be less expensive and affordable for litigants who will be able to actually observe appeal proceedings, and will mean a greater degree of transparency in the delivery of justice," Justice Minister David Adeang said.
