Australia's east coast is bracing for a cold snap to hit this week.

Temperatures could drop five degrees below average for parts of Victoria, while Sydney is expected to shiver through a low of nine degrees on Saturday.

The day will start off fine for many parts of the country, particularly around Sydney.

A cold air mass will move across the south-east, bringing chilly temperatures by the time the sun sets this evening.

The cold front has already swept across parts of South Australia.

The front is moving east across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.

Snowfall is expected in Australia's alpine regions below 900m.

Brisbane residents can expect a mostly fine and sunny day with a top of 27 degrees.

Cairns is experiencing a partly cloudy day with a couple of showers and a top of 30 degrees expected for today.

Sydney can expect a top of 25 degrees ahead of a late change rolling through.
