‘Leave your hat on’: Nationals MPs in cringeworthy melanoma awareness ad

Nationals MPs have flipped Akubras, danced and even jumped into a bathtub in an effort to raise awareness around melanoma.

The party yesterday released a cringeworthy video encouraging Australians to leave their hat on this summer to combat the country’s skin cancer rates.

Senators and MPs including Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, MP Darren Chester and Victorian MP Bridget McKenzie strutted their stuff to the song made popular by Joe Cocker and Tom Jones.

Beyond the whip crack and bathtub cameo, the video, supporting a campaign run by the Melanoma Institute Australia, has an important cause.

"The National Party are behind the 'Leave Your Hat On' campaign to try and prevent melanoma," Deputy Prime Minister Joyce, who last year underwent surgery to remove melanoma, said in the video.

“You might think the hat looks a bit silly but I tell you when they start cutting bits of your body off, they cut your nose off and they cut your ears off to get rid of the cancers, that looks even sillier.

“So, wear a hat.”

The Leave Your Hat On campaign runs from August 1 to September 30 and raises funds for melanoma research.
