Natalie Bassingthwaighte wanted to be a part of The Wrong Girl before it began.

The actress was lucky enough to see a script for the first season adaptation of Zoe Foster Blake's novel, but not lucky enough to get a part.

But she's now about to make her debut in season two. Bassingthwaighte plays pastry chef Gillian, the ex girlfriend of Jack, played by Rob Collins.

"I was ready to dive in from the beginning because I was lucky enough to read the script, but I didn't get a role in the first season so I was like 'I really want to be a part of this show'," she said.

"I'm so happy I got to wait until now because I really love Gillian and I love the character."

Now, her appearance has the potential to really complicate Lily (Jessica Marais) and Jack's relationship.

"She's Jack's ex, they were engaged once-upon-a-time, so that causes a very interesting dynamic in the group. Because Jack and Lily are together it causes a lot of insecurity for Lily, " she said.

But Bassingthwaighte says there's scope to develop a different sort of relationship between Gillian and Lily, taking inspiration from her own life.

"You can have a friendship with another woman who's been a partner. My husband has a very close friend of his who's an ex-partner and that is fine because I know they have a history and a great friendship," she said.

"But some people can't handle that. Sometimes it's easier said than done to have that relationship ongoing."

The actress says the timing has been great for her return to acting. Following a few years working in reality TV as a judge on The X Factor, she felt the pull of acting and returned to the job last year in Ten's car racing biopic Brock.

Bassingthwaighte returned to reality TV this year, entering the jungle for I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here and finished in a respectable third place.

"I had to wait for that time when there was enough of a break for people to not see me as that reality host type person, which is strange considering I just went into the jungle," she said.

* The Wrong Girl airs on Thursday at 8.40pm (AEST) on TEN And WIN Network.
