New name of Brisbane's Myer Centre revealed

Out with the old, in with the new.

Brisbane's iconic The Myer Centre has been rebranded to Uptown overnight.

Retail property group Vicinity Centres Regional General Manager, Daniel Sutton said the centre was open for business this morning, with retailers trading as usual.

"Uptown is very much open and trading, business as usual," Sutton said.

The group has not yet revealed what will move into the sprawling six-storey space when Myer vacates.

"Today marks an exciting first stage of reimagining this iconic asset's future," he said.

"Uptown will be a destination within the business CBD that will be worth going to town for."

Over the weekend, bargain hunters cleaned out Myer's flagship Queen Street location in the heart of the city and its hallmark sign was removed.

But the last rush was a far cry from the glory days, when the five-storey department store welcomed a stampede at every sale.

In its 35-year history, the store hosted its own fun park, saw a mall gunman cause a customer lockdown in 2013, and finally endured the retail deathknell of the COVID-19 pandemic.
