A protein bar sold at Coles and Woolworths around the country and online has been recalled after the self-declared "gluten-free" product was found to contain gluten.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand said the box the Muscle Nation Custard Protein Bar Cookies and Cream products were packed in wrongly branded the bars as "gluten free".

The wrappings of the individual bars themselves were correctly labelled.

"Any consumers who have a gluten allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed," the watchdog warned.

Customers are able to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
