Police have searched a Brisbane apartment in connection with the murder of a French exchange student.

The young woman's badly beaten body was found slumped in a gazebo on the banks of the Brisbane River early last Friday morning.

The woman has not been publicly identified but police say she is believed to be a foreign student who had been living in Brisbane for about a year.

The victim's boyfriend and another friend phoned police yesterday afternoon to report her missing after a public plea for information.

Last night police were seen searching an apartment complex for about one hour before leaving with bags of evidence, Nine News reports.

Police would not say who was living in the apartment but described the search as a "critical" part of their investigation.

A man believed to be aged in his 20s was also seen assisting police with their enquiries.

Police divers spent hours combing Brisbane River yesterday and looking through CCTV footage from businesses that surround the murder scene in the hope of pinpointing a suspect.

Detectives have also been talking to the victim's friends to track her final movements.
