The prime minister's indigenous adviser Warren Mundine says he won't be offended if he's not reappointed to the role in 2017.

Mr Mundine has publicly criticised the federal government on numerous occasions, recently claiming its review into indigenous incarceration was a joke thought up by a "dickhead".

He was appointed to the role by former prime minister Tony Abbott and said Mr Turnbull needed to pick his own team in February, telling ABC radio on Tuesday: "He needs to pick people he feels he can work with".
