Mum horrified by early release of son's abuser

The man who almost killed a six-month-old baby by shaking him is about to walk free from Muswellbrook Prison.

Adam Boardman has served six years of a 10-year sentence after leaving Coby Walther with severe brain damage, cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities.

Coby's mother, Sian Regal, told A Current Affair that she was horrified Boardman's minimal parole conditions, which prohibit him from drinking and from certain suburbs.

"I did ask that Adam not be unsupervised around children, but that's not on his parole," she said.

"I think children need to be protected from him."

Boardman was the partner of Coby's aunt, who babysat the then-six-month-old while Mrs Regal and her husband Sean went out to a Mother's Day dinner.

After being arrested he tried to pass off the blame, saying he thought "she" had injured Coby.

However, he finally confessed to police that he had "grabbed" the baby and shaken him.

Mrs Regal wants Boardman's early release and Coby's lasting struggle to highlight not only the devastating effects of child abuse and the dangers of light sentencing, but the ease with which violent offenders can blend back into society.

"I do it for Coby...any child - they need someone who's brave enough to speak out," she said.
