Mother in Perth schoolyard brawl charged with assault

A Perth woman has been charged with disorderly behaviour and common assault after she allegedly attacked a 14-year-old girl.

Melville High School student Savannah, 14, told 9NEWS the fight began earlier in the day when a classmate insulted her recently deceased mother.

Later, a brawl erupted between Savannah and the girl’s sister, before the mother of the two girls became involved, apparently angered at the earlier fight.

Savannah spoke to police today, with charges laid against the 39-year-old woman via summons.

If found guilty of the assault charge, the Yangebup mother faces a maximum penalty of $36,000 and three years imprisonment.

"I felt overwhelmed, I didn't know how to feel," Savannah said.

"I was really scared. All I could do was stick up for myself.

"I was really embarrassed.

"I just thought, 'I've got bruised eyes and a bruised nose, I just want to go home'."

She said she suffered two black eyes, an injured nose and back pain.

Off-camera, the sounds of hitting are heard.

Witnesses said the fight lasted 10 minutes and was seen by dozens of students, some of whom tried to intervene and pull the mother away.

A Melville High School spokesperson said the school had suspended two students for a maximum of 10 days.
