A nine-year-old boy has remarkably survived a fiery crash between a truck and car that claimed the lives of three other passengers in Victoria this morning.

Police are baffled as to how the boy survived the burning wreck, which forensic officers are still investigating to determine exactly how many people were travelling in the car.

The youngster was found wandering around when emergency services arrived at the crash scene and has been flown to the Royal Children's Hospital with serious injuries, the Herald Sun reports.

"Miraculously a nine-year-old boy has survived. It's just a miracle he's survived. We don't know how," Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said.

"No doubt he'll be struggling. No doubt he'll be struggling for life.

"The other parties that were involved in this collision, with the exception of the truck driver, have been killed."

The car and truck collided and caught fire at Catani, southeast of Melbourne, around 9am.

The 27-year-old truck driver received superficial injuries.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Dandenong Hospital.

Experts from the Disaster Victim Identification Unit have been brought in to identify the victims.
