Imagine being whisked from one city to another in a pod carried by a tube at speeds of up to 1200km/h.

That's the vision of Los Angeles company Hyperloop One, which will share its vision with federal MPs in Sydney on Friday.

The invention uses electric propulsion to accelerate a passenger or cargo vehicle through a tube using magnetic levitation.

Hyperloop representatives will front a parliamentary committee that's looking into new mass transit technologies, including options for high-speed rail.

"There are concepts coming on line now which have the capacity to completely transform the way we move about," committee chair," Liberal MP John Alexander said.

Other witnesses include Australian company Bishop Austrans and Consolidated Land and Rail Australia.
