MPs seek Mid-East, North Africa ban

Nationals MP George Christensen and independent Bob Katter have called for a ban on Middle Eastern and North African migrants.

Police allege Frenchman Smail Ayad cried out "Allahu Akbar" during the north Queensland backpacker hostel attack that left 21-year-old British backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung dead and another British man, Tom Jackson, 30, fighting for life.

ASIO, Australian Federal Police and Queensland investigators are trying to find out if the Frenchman had any links to extreme ideologies.

"The time has come now to stop people from those countries coming to Australia," Mr Katter told Sky News.

"I think the risk to the Australian people now is so great that that should not occur anymore."

Mr Christensen said Mr Katter was right.

"What caused this individual to yell out that uniquely Islamic expression? And would he have killed if he was unable to justify his killing with a cry of 'Allahu Akbar' and the beliefs behind that cry?" Mr Christensen wrote on his Facebook page.

"These are hard questions and I don't have all the answers.

"What I do know is that one Islamist prone to violent extremism let into our country is one too many. Whatever we can do to tighten up our screening processes to weed out such violent extremists the better."
