MPs examine family violence legal system

Improving protection and support offered to victims of domestic violence through the family law system will be investigated by a parliamentary inquiry.

The financial needs of domestic violence survivors, accommodating self-represented parties in legal proceedings and the capacity of family law professionals to respond to such cases will all be examined.

"The committee will consider what has been done so far - and what more can be done - to meet the needs of vulnerable people in family law proceedings," committee chair Sarah Henderson said on Thursday.

Federal politicians will also explore a national approach on enforcing intervention or apprehended violence orders.

"The committee will consider what further reforms might be required to ensure the family law system is meeting the needs of everyone involved - particularly victims of family violence, including children," Ms Henderson said.

In addition to accepting written submissions, the inquiry is also launching an anonymous online questionnaire for anyone wanting to make a personal contribution.

It is also seeking expressions of interest from anybody who may wish to make a short statement to the committee about their experience.

Submissions close on May 3.
