Mother-to-be gets helping hand after car accident took her husband

After trying for a baby for seven years, Kristy Kirchner should have been elated the day she learned she had finally fallen pregnant.

Instead, the day Ms Kirchner discovered she was going to be a mother was the very same day she was preparing to bury her husband.

Royce Kirchner, 35, was killed in a car accident on October 8 this year, just ten minutes from the family home in Mount Archer, Queensland.

Mr Kirchner died instantly.

The tragedy came five days after Ms Kirchner had been implanted with a fertilised embryo through IVF.

“How can I ever take comfort of any kind in the fact that I am pregnant, but my husband doesn't get to experience this,” Ms Kirchner told A Current Affair.

The couple had been saving for IVF since 2011.

Ms Kirchner never thought she’d be announcing her pregnancy at her husband’s funeral.

“At the funeral I debated whether I was going to announce it in Royce's eulogy,” she said.

“And it was really difficult but I decided to do that because Royce was right next to me in the casket. This was the last time I could announce to the world with my husband that we were pregnant.”

Ms Kirchner had started a YouTube channel, ConcieveABaby to document her IVF journey.

“I’m pregnant. This is not now how I was supposed to be telling this story,” Ms Kirchner says in the first video she posted after her husband’s death.

Ms Kirchner has been left with a mortgage she can’t afford and a dilapidated house Mr Kirchner was going to transform into a cottage.

A Current Affair and a team of trade volunteers are now helping the pregnant widower to transform her home.
