Morrison tries to win over Chinese voters

Scott Morrison has cited the racist remarks of a fallen state Labor leader while trying to win over members of Sydney's Chinese community.

Michael Daley spectacularly failed at the recent NSW election after claiming Asian immigrants were taking people's jobs.

The prime minister pounced on his comments at a Chinatown restaurant on Wednesday afternoon, days out from the federal election.

"I think that sort of statement goes against the very heart of what our Australian immigration success has always been about," he told the 80-strong crowd.

Mr Morrison also attacked Opposition Leader Bill Shorten for taking six days to denounce the remarks.

"As a prime minister, I can assure you we will maintain the integrity and success of that immigration program," he said.

"To ensure it is supported by Australians - that it is enthusiastically embraced by Australians - and the multicultural society in which we live.

"Because from that comes a great strength, from that comes a great prosperity."
