Morrison rejects backbench climate nerves

Scott Morrison has shrugged off the concerns of nervous backbenchers, who fear voters deserted the Liberal Party in Wentworth because of its inaction on climate change.

Moderate Liberal MPs Trent Zimmerman and Tim Wilson both believe their party's inertia on global warming was a major factor in losing the blue ribbon Sydney seat.

The prime minister disagrees.

"We'll meet all the targets that we've set for ourselves and that's exactly what we're doing and that's our record," he told ABC radio on Friday.

Mr Morrison declined to name an independent scientist to back up his position.

"Well, I point to the evidence," he said.

"Kyoto One, totally beat. Kyoto Two, we will totally beat."

The prime minister said people underestimated the likely investment in renewable energy over the next 10 years, which he believes will help the government meet its 2030 climate targets.

"I mean, renewables are standing on their own two feet. I think that's fantastic," he said.
