Morrison open to changes to religion bill

The prime minister is open to changes to his government's religious freedom bill amid concerns from business and politicians from other parties.

Scott Morrison's government is consulting widely on draft laws to protect people against discrimination on the basis of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.

Labor, the Greens, and key Senate crossbencher Jacqui Lambie have questioned the need for the laws as they're currently written.

And business lobby the Australian Industry Group has concerns it will give employees too much leeway to breach company policies on social media without consequences.

Mr Morrison said consultation on the draft legislation had been going "really, really well".

"We've been, I think, quite patient as we've sought to take this bill forward and we'll keep doing that," he told reporters in Chicago.

"We'll listen very carefully to the consultations that we're having and if there are further amendments that are necessary for the bill before it's introduced to the parliament, then we'll make those judgments as a cabinet."
