Morrison looks at deporting refugee

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison is considering law changes that would allow him to deport an Afghan refugee who is a registered sex offender.

Mr Morrison says he is looking at the character provisions under the Migration Act.

"The current provisions of that Act don't fill me with all the confidence that I suspect the community would like," he told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday.

"It's a very, very concerning issue."

Mr Morrison flagged the government would bring forward a package of changes and says currently he has more flexibility to deport people convicted of crimes who are on bridging visas.

Under existing legislation people can only be deported for criminal convictions which carried custodial sentences of 12 months or more, the minister says.

The refugee was convicted in the Geelong Magistrates' Court in August of indecently assaulting one boy and attempting to assault another, a Victorian police spokeswoman told AAP.

He received a two-year community corrections order with 300 hours of unpaid community work and was later put on the sex offenders register for 15 years.
