Govt again blocks fed corruption watchdog

The Morrison government has again blocked draft legislation which would set up a federal corruption watchdog.

The Greens bill passed the Senate last year, but the government stalled its progress in the House of Representatives in September before doing so again on Tuesday.

The minor party's new leader Adam Bandt had attempted to enlist disgruntled LNP MP Llew O'Brien to vote with the cross bench and Labor, but he stuck with his coalition colleagues.

With the government winning the vote 72-70 the bill has been pushed down the priority list to another sitting period.

"This is our chance to have a federal ICAC," Mr Bandt said before his microphone was turned off due to interjections by the government.

The coalition has promised to create a Commonwealth Integrity Commission but is yet to release draft legislation.

Mr O'Brien quit the Nationals party room after Barnaby Joyce's failed leadership bid, but said he would continue to vote with the government.

However, his potential as a wildcard was on display on Monday when he accepted Labor's nomination for deputy speaker and beat the Nationals' pick for the role.
