Month’s worth of rain in a week coming for millions of Aussies
Some parts of Australia’s south-east could receive a month’s worth of rain in the next week as two major rainbands sweep the country.
A warning has been issued for central and north-eastern Victoria, with flooding expected as rain falls on still-wet ground.

“A series of cold fronts are forecast to cross Victoria from Monday and continue through to Friday, which is likely to bring widespread moderate rainfall across north east and central Victoria,” the Bureau of Meteorology said in its warning.
Minor to moderate flooding is expected, including in the Kiewa River catchment, where an existing flood warning is still current.
Sheep graziers in the region have also been warned about the oncoming inclement weather.
“A series of upper-level troughs interacting with moisture-laden air will cause two large bands of cloud and rain to sweep across central and southeastern Australia this week,” Weatherzone reported.
“The first will pass through on Monday and Tuesday, before the second follows on Wednesday and Thursday.”
These bands will be succeeded by a low-pressure system across the national south-east, Weatherzone said, which will bring rain and snow.
There are forecasts of up to 100mm of rain in parts of NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania, especially northern Tasmania, southern NSW, and central and north-eastern Victoria.
Weatherzone said isolated totals of 200mm for the week in those areas were also a possibility.
Wider falls of 30mm to 60mm will be seen across broader swathes of country, including in Queensland and South Australia.
“Rain bands like the ones affecting Australia this week are common in winter,” Weatherzone said.
“However, seeing two in quick succession followed by further wet weather from a low could see some areas collecting a month’s worth of rain over the next seven days.”
